Welcome to Still Point

Still Point is an official faculty/staff organization at Appalachian State University dedicated to exploring contemplative pedagogy and practice in the context of higher education. We support and organize campus events, workshops and opportunities for contemplative pedagogy and related contemplative practices that encourage deep learning and well-being in ourselves and our students.

Contemplative inquiry is an introspective, critical first-person approach to learning across the academic disciplines. Contemplative inquiry allows us to appreciate the deeper meaning of our ideas and experiences and bring a richer discernment to our action in the world.  It includes diverse forms, such as yoga, breathing work, deep listening exercises, mindfulness meditation and reflective journaling, which research has shown to enrich capacities for:

  • self-awareness
  • clear attention
  • well-being
  • compassion and empathy
  • leadership develop
  • academic performance

Still Point is acommunity of practice comprised of faculty/staff/students engaged in contemplative inquiry in their personal/professional lives.

The purpose of Still Point is to create space for contemplative inquiry, and the exploration of contemplative practice, pedagogy, and research in diverse forms.  Through a variety of campus activities, Still Point will support the application of contemplative inquiry across the university through personal/professional development opportunities for staff and faculty, curricular innovation, and multi-disciplinary research.  Still Point seeks to affirm and enrich the value of contemplative inquiry as a powerful mode of teaching, learning, research and engagement that complements the university’s commitment to sustainable and just communities.

Still Point will nurture the development of contemplative inquiry at Appalachian State University in order to contribute to a climate of health and well-being on campus.

We align ourselves with the Center for Contemplative Mind in Society which holds the following vision:

We envision an education that promotes the exploration of meaning, purpose and values and seeks to serve our common human future. An education that enables and enhances personal introspection and contemplation leads to the realization of our inextricable connection to each other, opening the heart and mind to true community, deeper insight, sustainable living, and a more just society.

In this way, Still Point will serve as a connective resource for the entire campus community in the exploration of contemplative inquiry and its application to teaching, learning, research and service as part of a broad-based international movement related to the integration of contemplative inquiry in higher education.
